Natural Weed Control

With recent rains and unusually warm temperatures, our lawn seemed to have sprouted overnight. Along with the increasingly tall grass, the dandelions began popping up their sunny yellow tops.

I used to have a love/hate relationship with dandelions. I loved their color but hated their "weediness" covering my lawn. Once I learned our tortoise LOVED to eat dandelions (and benefited from them), I began to let him (her?) take care of it.

It seemed Turtly would just go straight for the dandelion tops and nothing else. It reminded me of Thumper in  the "Bambi" movie. To quote him:
"Eating greens is a special treat. It makes long ears and great big feet. But it sure is awful stuff to eat. I made that last part up myself."
Well, Turtly does like to eat the green, but only after he's gone around eating the flowers.

Here's the "Before" Picture:

After a sunny afternoon of roaming around in the backyard, he seemed to have the dandelion population under control.

There are just a few left, but Turtly's belly is full and we have significantly fewer dandelion tops in the yard.

Maybe we should hire him out to the neighbors to take care of their yards as well...
